While creating the macro (which is just about done)
I was thinking about the problem of how we record Hebrew variants.
We record everthing else in terms of language
(Greek, Aramaic, Syriac, Samaritan)
We use Qumran for Hebrew MSS in the DSScrolls,
but what about the Ketiv / Kere ? and what about the other MSS?
How do you feel about "Written Hebrew" and "Spoken Hebrew",
(scholars should work out this is Ketiv/Kere because they'll always
be in a pair)
and (more controversially) what about "Karaite" for non-Massoretic
Hebrew which isn't at Qumran?
I don't like it (because people don't know the term Karaite) but it
does describe the MSS fairly well.
I think virtually all (if not all) the non-Massoretic MSS come from
Karaite collections, mainly from Geniza collections.
The other option is "non-Massoretic Hebrew", but this makes one think
of Qumran as well.
What do you think?
